Awards and Features

I strive to produce exceptional, artistic documentation of each of my client’s birth stories, first and foremost. And, while it’s not my primary goal, it’s also been a great honor in my career to have my work not only featured, but consistently win awards among an incredibly talented group of professional birth photographers in a number of international organizations.

These competitions push me to analyze my own art and strive toward constantly learning and improving my craft. I’m grateful to my clients for giving me permission to share their stories and humbled by the praise I’ve received from professionals in my field.

Here are some of my award-winning images through the years:

Feedback received from judges about this image:

Feedback Panelist #1: Hanna Hill

This framing is truly remarkable and show-stopping, which is perfect for a showcase like this! The way you captured the moment of birth in perfect focus and with utmost respect, while also expressing the perspective of the midwife, is genuinely powerful and unique. My favorite part is the midwife's bloody croc in the frame! I also admire how you intentionally kept the birthing person bright, directing our eyes straight to that epic moment. To get picky, a slight crop from the left might have enhanced the composition even further. Nevertheless, the overall creative way you've captured this moment and shared the narrative of the midwife's story is incredibly unique and wonderful! Your talent shines through, leaving us in awe of the beauty and significance of the birthing experience and the remarkable role of the midwife.

Feedback Panelist #2: Amber Raines

Incredible! Instantly, I observed your intentionality and willingness to go and move your body, in your words, "meeting them wherever they are" in an effort to fully capture the moment. Your artistic eye crafts a composition so captivating that we become immersed in the story through details, exploring every nuance and savoring the experience. Wow! I do not have much critique as this image is astounding on its own. The most that I could add is maybe trying to crop this image to take away some of the negative space of the midwife's left leg. Now let's get back to your incredible job. I am curious, were you on the ground to get this focus? The focus of this image paints a mesmerizing portrait of the birth thanks to your effort and keen eye for focus. Your approach to capturing the moment of birth is evident. Overall, an incredible image reflecting how amazing the Birth Team is!

Birth Becomes You's 2020 Image Celebration

About the 2020 Image Celebration, in the words of Birth Becomes You:In the past, we’ve had annual photo competitions where photographers in the international birth community submitted their best work of the year. These images were judged professionally and shared worldwide. This year, we held an Image Celebration instead. Members of our online community submitted photos for our FB group to collectively vote on. We received so many incredible submissions, and we loved seeing the community and support that came once it was time to vote and comment on the images. The collection you see here was determined by popular votes within the Birth Becomes You community. While we still wanted to honor the births documented during this unique period, it was also vitally important that we hold space for those births that weren’t documented/supported because of the pandemic. Instead of having a “competition”, we’ve put together a collection of images that are unlike any that we’ve ever seen before. This is a year that none of us will ever forget, and regardless of what our stories were, we all went through this pandemic together.”
